Thanks for sharing your memory! Shumai comes in different forms across various regional Chinese cuisines. some are shaped like little pouches with twisted, sealed tops. I haven’t tried frying shumai myself, but I’ve seen it served that way in some restaurants in China. Hope you’re able to find a recipe that matches what you’re looking for!

Hi I was wondering can shumai be deep fried too? I remember eating at a Chinese restaurant when I was a little girl and I really loved these pork filled shumai’s I thought they were wontons because they looked just liked the ones from the wonton soup so my mom ordered me some wontons but we got the fried triangle appetizers instead. When we explained what I was really wanting they told us they were called shumai’s. But these ones are crunchy and fried and kind of twisted on top. Since becoming an adult I have been looking for a similar recipe so I can make them myself. I loved those appetizers so much and it reminds me of eating out at the Chinese restaurant with my family.

Great to hear that Susan. Next time you can try cutting off the four corners of the square wrappers.

These siu mai are easy to make (thanks to your detailed instructions) and delicious to enjoy. The siu mai wrappers sold here in Australia are not round like yours but square like the wonton wrappers. My siu mai are therefore not as asthetically appealing like yours because there are too many wrinkles, some of which I had to trim away. However, the taste makes up for it!
